Perceptual sampling of orthogonal straight line features.

چکیده
Among mathematical models of visual confusion of letters and similar material, those that posit a feature detect ion process have been especially popular. The present s tudy provides direct tests of several of the central assumptions of such models with feature-stimuli composed of the blank, one of two straight line features, or both line. features posit ioned at a right angle. In one condition, the two features were connected when they appeared together, whereas in the other condition they were separated by a gap. A model which makes the strong assumptions that the features are sampled ( 'detected ' ) independently and then reported in a direct, unbiased fashion, performed acceptably in both conditions. Feature dependency models and those positing a biased decision process were ruled out on the basis of poor fits or lack of parsimony. The perceptibil i ty (d') of a specific feature depended on the stimulus that contained it in the Gap condit ion but not in the Connected condition. The relative perceptibil i ty of the horizontal vs in the vertical features was also different in the Gap vs Connected conditions. The results were compared with other recent studies, including ones in which sampling independence was falsified, apparently because of greater stimulus complexity, and employing a stimulus set that did not contain all possible combinations of features.

High level emotional speech morphing using STRAIGHT
This paper presents high-level strategies for controlling emotional speech morphing algorithms. Emotion morphing is realized by representing the acoustic features in their timefrequency plan that is warped and modified to generate natural morphed emotional speech. These acoustic features are desirable to be decomposed into multidimensional space and to be orthogonal. After matching these acoust...
متن کاملThermal Development for Ducts of Arbitrary Cross Sections by Boundary-Fitted Coordinate Transformation Method
The non-orthogonal boundary-fitted coordinate transformation method is applied to the solution of steady three-dimensional momentum and energy equations in laminar flow to obtain temperature field and Nusselt numbers in the thermal entry region of straight ducts of different cross sectional geometries. The conservation equations originally written in Cartesian coordinates are parabolized in the...
متن کاملArea-eecient Algorithms for Upward Straight-line Tree Drawings ?
In this paper, we investigate planar upward straight-line grid drawing problems for bounded-degree rooted trees so that a drawing takes up as little area as possible. A planar upward straight-line grid tree drawing satisses the following four constraints: (1) all vertices are placed at distinct grid points (grid), (2) all edges are drawn as straight lines (straight-line), (3) no two edges in th...
متن کاملSkeleton computation of orthogonal polyhedra
Skeletons are powerful geometric abstractions that provide useful representations for a number of geometric operations. The straight skeleton has a lower combinatorial complexity compared with the medial axis. Moreover, while the medial axis of a polyhedron is composed of quadric surfaces the straight skeleton just consist of planar faces. Although there exist several methods to compute the str...
متن کاملTree Drawings Revisited
We make progress on a number of open problems concerning the area requirement for drawing trees on a grid. We prove that 1. every tree of size n (with arbitrarily large degree) has a straight-line drawing with area n2 √ log logn log log , improving the longstanding O(n log n) bound; 2. every tree of size n (with arbitrarily large degree) has a straight-line upward drawing with area n √ log n(lo...
